Change and What to Expect

Updated: Dec 30, 2020

Whether you're looking for big or small changes, figuring things out for yourself seems to only take you so far. Online articles, talking to friends, reading the latest self-help book or flipping thru motivational quotes can only seem to reinforce the fact that you're stuck and you don't know what to do next. The process of counseling can offer a chance to work beyond the limited awareness we have of our own experience and see new possibilities that exist. Dealing with change can be a difficult process, one that can bring it's own share of anxieties, but when it does right it can create a springboard for a new phase in your life. Whenever you start working with a counselor you should have a few expectations; such as; non-judgemental, limited with their self disclosure, listen attentively and when they challenge they do it in an inviting way. If a counselor spends more then a few minutes talking about themselves then it may be a sign to look for a different one. It's important that the counseling session is about you so that you can express yourself without fear of judgement and gain awareness. Depending on issues that you may be working with counseling can be a short-term process, compared to dealing with trauma based issues that can require a longer period of time. It's important to stick with the counseling process as long as you feel comfortable with the counselor that you're working.
